Access And Correction
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act Information Privacy Principle 6, consumers are entitled to access personal information held by agencies about themselves, and Principle 7 enables them to request correction. Any New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or any other individual in New Zealand may make a request for access or correction of personal information under the Privacy Act.
The Privacy Act sets out certain time limits for agencies to respond to requests. Agencies must respond “as soon as reasonably practicable” and in any case not later than 20 working days after receiving the request. Sometimes a response may take longer. For instance, if the request has to be transferred to another agency or there is a lot of material to gather.
